TED Talk #3 at UAA: "Legal Careers"

Urban Action Academy Hosts TED Talk: "Know Your Rights"
25 students from UAA and Brooklyn School for Career Development (BSCD) participated in the first TED Talk Series, "Know Your Rights" at Urban Action Academy on Thursday, March 29, 2018. DOE Trial Attorney Ms. Catherine Sam engaged students in a meaningful conversation about the 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments to the United States Constitution. One female student shared with participants a copy of the Constitution, which she carries in her backpack along with her chemistry and Global History textbooks.
Students also participated in several role plays that simulate police encounters, with Ms. Sam's guidance. Students left the TED Talk equipped with knowing the four (4) basic steps to take during a police encounter.
In a message to Principal Steve Dorcely, Ms. Sam said the following about the event:
Thank you so much for the opportunity to share "Know Your Rights" at Urban Academy's first ever …
On Tuesday, August 28, Urban Action Academy welcomed incoming freshman for an orientation to high school life. After a brief ice breaker, students met some of the 9th Grade Team, including Ms. Smith, Mr. Nagy, and Mr. Faiella; as well as Guidance Counselor Ms. Desroches; APs Ms. Razak, Mr. Mento, and Dr. Isom; Dean Ms. Fagan; Parent Coordinator Ms. Bradford; and Principal Dr. Garcia.
Students learned about some of the rigors of High School, some tips for success, and what they will need to get to graduation in 2022. Following that, Mr. Nagy, Mr. Mento, and upperclassmen volunteers took the new freshmen on a tour of the building and field. Everyone left with an Urban Action Academy shirt and other give-aways.
Thank you to those students and parents who joined us. Thank you also to the staff who came out to show their support to the incoming class.
